Abuse is an odd social tool. The vast majority of society uses this tool. Though if pointed out, 98% of them would not realize it.
Abuse comes in many different forms. Physical abuse is the easiest to identify. Further, there is the subtle verbal abuse an authority figure may use on a subordinate. This may be a parent to a child, or a teacher to a student.
I guess when you break it down there are only two types of abuse.
They would be the Physical abuse, and verbal abuse. Whether the verbal be the sly backstabbing comments. Or someone who uses words to manipulate those around them. Or perhaps someone chooses not to talk to another. I think we called this the “silent treatment” as kids. Given the proper circumstances (a mom or a dad to a child) this can be very abusive.
There is Psychological abuse. But to me this is just a certain tactic or end goal for abuse via the aforementioned methods.
To address your stated example. I’d say this could be chalked up to poor marriage choice. This is coming from an unmarried individual, so this is total speculation. But i would suspect their reason for marriage. It is likely that they allowed themselves to become attracted to one another for reasons outside those that bind two individuals.
What might these poorly chosen binding things be?
Perhaps they allowed sex to be the only relevant thing in their relationship. Everyone knows that once married, the human body physically depletes and “deflates” so to speak. Perhaps if these two had not gotten married, but just did the dirty indefinitely?
Who knows; maybe the binding factor was drugs. Maybe one was with the other only for the prospect of free drugs. Obviously once married the dealer would no longer feel obligated to feed the begging hand. And everyone knows a druggie without their vice is no person at all.
